To provide a better quality of life
and to make Surat a self reliant and sustainable city with all basic amenities,
our commitment is for 100% coverage in terms of geographical areas and
population for the year 2005, by providing a comprehensive sewerage system by
the end of December 2005.
Surat Municipal Corporation has
prepared a master plan for comprehensive sewerage system (more than 500 Km of
sewers and 6 sewage treatment works) to serve not only the domestic and
commercial but also the industrial developments for the year 2021. Wastewater
generated from all this developments is collected by a network of underground
sewers and pumping stations and conveyed to sewage treatment works for physical
and biological treatment to meet the parameters prescribed by the Gujarat
Pollution Control Board before discharge into nearest water course.
Out of the total city area of 112.27 sq.km., 90.54 % area and 94.68 % of the present population have
been covered with sewerage systems.

The functions of the Department include Planning, designing, estimating, tendering, executing and operating as
well as maintaining the sewerage systems which consists of sewerage network, sewage pumping stations, sewage pumping
mains, sewage treatment and effluent disposal works etc.

At present, there are 6 (six) nos. of Sewage Treatment Plant and 28 nos. of Sewage Pumping Stations. Out of these 6 (six) sewage
treatment plants, the operation & maintenance of 4 (four) sewage treatment plants located at Bhatar Singanpore, Bamroli and
Karanj is carried out by private agencies , while the remaining 2 (two) sewage treatment plants located at Anjana and Bhesan and
all the pumping stations are operated and maintained by the department. The contractual cost for the operation & maintenance of
sewage treatment plant at Bhatar, Singanpore, Bamroli and Karanj , is Rs. 192.0 Lacs, per annum, which includes the cost of spares
and all other consumables except the cost of Chlorine and energy.
Surat Municipal Corporation gives the contract for desisting of manholes and drainage lines in the different parts of the
city to the private agencies.
